Accessibility statement
UKSpeedTest.co.uk should work for as many people as possible, whatever device, browser or assistive technology you use. This page explains what is built in, what the accessibility tools button does, what we know still needs work, and how to tell us about a problem.
The accessibility tools button
Every page has an AA Accessibility button in the bottom left corner (you can move it). It opens a panel that changes how the site looks and reads, and it is the same tool used on BroadbandSwitch.uk, developed there with feedback from Ofcom during the site's accreditation work. Nothing you set leaves your device: settings are kept in your own browser, with no cookies, no account and no tracking.
- One-tap setups: Low vision, Dyslexia friendly, Calm and focus, and Keyboard and screen reader. Each switches several settings at once and you can fine tune afterwards.
- Text: size from 100% to 200% with the layout reflowing rather than zooming, WCAG text spacing, left alignment, a high legibility typeface or a dyslexia friendly one.
- Colour: dark, high contrast and cream low-glare themes, each checked against WCAG 2.2 AA, plus muted or greyscale colour.
- Reading aids: underline every link, a bold keyboard focus ring, a larger pointer, stop animation, release sticky bars, hide images, a reading ruler and a reading mask, and read aloud using your device's own voice.
- Navigate: jump to any heading or page region from a list.
- Keyboard shortcuts: Alt + Shift + A opens and closes the panel; Alt + Shift + R resets everything; Escape closes the panel. If anything ever goes wrong, adding
?a11y=resetto any page address also resets everything.
With default settings the tool does nothing at all to the page, so visitors who never open it get exactly the site they would have had without it.
Built in on every page
- Keyboard support for every control, including start, test length, result chips, the postcode form and the menu, with a visible focus ring.
- A skip link straight to the main content, and landmark regions (header, navigation, main, footer) for screen readers.
- The speed test announces its progress and result through a live region, and every result tile has a written label as well as a number.
- Text and buttons checked for WCAG 2.2 AA contrast, including every button on the dark test panel.
- Layouts that work from 320 px phones to large desktops without sideways scrolling, and touch targets of at least 42 px on touch screens.
- Reduced motion respected: the live trace and the idle heartbeat stop animating when your system asks for less motion.
- Every diagram and infographic has a written description, a caption and the underlying numbers as a table on its own page.
Known limitations
- The speed test needs JavaScript. Without it the guides and infographics still work, but the test itself cannot run.
- Some provider pages are long. The Navigate tab in the accessibility panel lists every heading so you can jump straight to the part you need.
- Read aloud uses the voice built into your device, so quality varies by browser and operating system. Screen reader users should use their own reader instead.
